What to do if you become a victim of identify theft:
- File a police report
- Notify all financial institutions where you have relationships
- Notify credit bureau fraud units, place a fraud alert statement on your credit report and request bi-monthly copies of your credit report until your case is resolved (this is free to fraud victims)
- Check the post office for an unauthorized change of address request
- Report check theft to check verification companies
- Keep copies of all correspondence related to the theft of your identify
